Steve started CrossFit in 2011 because of a knee injury. After months of nursing it, “taking it easy,” and some USAF sponsored physical therapy, he signed up with a local CrossFit gym in Montgomery, AL. With an athletic background of cross country, wrestling and track & field, he had done very little weight lifting. With some exceptional coaching, he was able to learn the various movements, repeat them consistently, finally, adding the secret sauce, intensity. After 6 months of attending classes, he tested for his military physical training test and found that he had gone from a 9:45 1.5 mile run to a 9:06 just by following an effective CrossFit program. He was hooked!
He met his love, Ashley, in 2012. She too was almost exclusively a runner when they met. A couple of workouts at the ‘box’ and a few runs later, they were married within the year on November 9th. Steve was fortunate enough to get his CrossFit Level 1 certification in 2013 but didn’t go on to coach for any type of compensation for quite some time. Him and his wife competed in Montgomery and on into Germany, following their military careers with some luck at winning RX competitions, sometimes at the same time! In Germany they had their first child, a son named Gabriel. Shortly after his birth they changed stations to Scott AFB here in IL and love it!
Steve has always had a good time with coaching, no matter what the class size, but what keeps him going is watching athletes and beginners alike, grow. Not just with physical goals, but finding themselves mentally and emotionally as well, always developing that ever essential and universal non-quitting spirit. I’ve found no better place to temper all of these skills at once.
